How to pack a graded PSA card for shipping
Step-by-step instructions to protect a PSA-graded trading card for shipping: prepare the slab, add rigid support and padding, and choose secure outer packaging so the grade and identifier arrive intact.
Quick facts
- Top loader
- 130pt top loader
- Bracing
- extra stiff bracing
What you need
Gather materials before you start: the graded slab, a 130pt top loader, a penny sleeve (optional), foam or bubble wrap, extra stiff bracing, a sturdy outer box or padded envelope, strong tape, and a shipping label. These items protect the slab and the PSA grade sticker and identifier printed on the holder.
Prepare the slab
Keep the slab face-up on a clean surface. If the slab is loose in its current holder, slide it into the 130pt top loader to limit flex. If you use a penny sleeve, place the slab in the sleeve first to prevent scratches on the slab surface or barcode when handling and scanning.
Add internal support and cushioning
Place the slab centered on a sheet of extra stiff bracing cut slightly smaller than the outer box interior so the slab cannot shift. Add thin layers of foam or bubble wrap on both faces of the slab without pressing directly on the grade label. The goal is immobilization with cushioning on all sides to prevent bending and impact.
Choose and prepare outer packaging
Use a box that fits the slab plus bracing and cushioning with minimal extra space. If you use a padded envelope, ensure the envelope is rated for rigid contents or double-box the slab. Seal all seams with strong tape and reinforce corners. Mark the package with a clear shipping label and include a duplicate identifier inside, such as the PSA certification number on paper, so a collector or recipient can confirm the grade if the external label is damaged.
Handling, tracking and handoff
Treat the packed slab as a rigid, fragile item: avoid stacking heavy parcels on it and avoid sharp impacts. Scan or record the slab’s identifier and photograph the packed item before drop-off so you have a condition record. Choose tracked shipping and require a signature on delivery when possible to protect the card and its grade during transit.
If you use a packing or shipping tool
You can use a packing checklist or app to track the slab’s identifier, scan images, and shipping tracking number. Slabbr can help record the slab identifier, attach photos of the packed card, and store the tracking number for your records.
Common questions
- Should I remove a card from a PSA slab before shipping?
- No. Do not remove a card from a PSA slab. The slab and its grade sticker are part of the grade and removing the card risks damaging the card and voiding the grading integrity.
- Is a top loader enough protection by itself?
- A top loader protects against flex but is not enough by itself for shipping. Combine the top loader with extra stiff bracing and external cushioning or a small box to prevent impact and bending during transit.
- How should I label the package?
- Affix a clear shipping label with the recipient address and your return information. Also include a duplicate paper with the slab’s identifier or PSA certification number inside the package so the recipient can confirm the grade if the exterior label is damaged.
